Reasons Why My Air Conditioner Is Not Cooling My House

Have you ever come home after a hot, and all you want is to sit by the AC and cool yourself, only to be disappointed by the AC doing nothing? This could be frustrating and alarming, especially if you did not expect it to happen. But what could be the reason why your AC fails to cool the air inside your house? Like every machinery, there is always a reason behind a specific behavior. The air conditioner failing to cool the air inside the house could be triggered by various reasons.

Clogged Air Filters

Surprised? Yes. Something as simple as a clogged filter can be the reason behind your woes. When the air filters accumulate too much dirt and dust and forget to replace them, they restrict airflow. This interferes with the proper functioning of the unit, thus reducing its ability to cool the air around significantly. It is advisable to constantly replace or clean the filters depending on the type you are using.

Dirty Condenser Coils

If you notice your AC is not cooling the air around as it should, yet the air filters are clean, the next possible culprit would be the condenser coils. This may have accumulated a lot of dirt and debris over time that they cannot dissipate heat outside appropriately. Unfortunately, as the coils become dirtier, the AC loses its cooling ability, forcing it to compensate. This may cause the unit to overload and overstrain, leading to more severe problems. To fix this, clean the condenser coils or call an HVAC professional to inspect and clean them appropriately.

Insufficient Refrigerant

Your HVAC system is less likely to cool the air around effectively if it does not have enough coolant. This coolant flows through the condenser coils, cooling the air around it before pushing the cold air into other room parts. If the coolant is too low, it will not work efficiently. This is a complex problem that you should never attempt to handle. Instead, call an AC expert to help refill the coolant, and restore everything to normal.

Damaged Compressor

A faulty compressor may be behind your AC cooling troubles. Generally, the compressor is the powerhouse of the AC and is said to be responsible for cooling the house. As such, a defective compressor interferes with the cooling efficiency. When the compressor/motor fails to compress the coolant or refrigerant, there will be no circulation in the evaporator and condenser coils. In most cases, when the compressor breaks down, the cooling cycle fails to start, which in turn causes the AC to fail.

Thermostat

Everything about the HVAC system may be perfect, but the AC still fails to cool your house. In such a case, the thermostat may be the issue. Since it serves as the sensor that depicts the temperature around the house and communicates with the compressor to start or stop the cooling cycle, it needs to be working correctly throughout. The communication is topped if the thermostat breaks down, and no cooling will be initiated.

Wrong Size for Square Footage

Not many homeowners appreciate the need to have the correct AC size. It is not enough to buy an AC that fits your budget, mainly if it does not serve the needs of your home. Before spending any cash on an AC, have the HVAC professional come around and access the requirements in your home. They can then recommend the right sized AC that will not overwork or underwork.

Unfortunately, not many homeowners heed this recommendation, and many buy undersized ACs. Installing a small AC in a large room will not compete favorably during peak summer seasons. No matter what you do, the AC does not match the room’s needs and will not keep the space cool. In such cases, only replacing the AC with the appropriate size will be helpful.

Leaking Ductwork

This can happen in old homes where the ductwork is old and due for repair or replacement. A leaking air duct can cause the AC not to cool your space even when it is running. It is important to properly seal the ductwork system to ensure that cool air does not leak into attic space. If you suspect that there is leaking ductwork, consider requesting professional assessment and repairs. Sometimes the AC fails to cool your area simply because it is old and weary. You may have to replace the AC to salvage this situation because repairs will only offer temporary solutions.

Customer Reviews

Called Absolute for my 81 year old landlord in the height of Summer heat. Scott came out to inspect the old beast of an AC and found many issues. He took the time to educate us, note everything, photograph it and provide several recommendations...and my stubborn landlord has done nothing LOL. A couple months later we asked that Scott come back out and he was there that same day.
